Good morning, Chicago,

We’re less than two weeks away from the Block Club Block Party — one of my favorite days of the year! If you don’t have plans yet from noon-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, meet us at Half Acre Beer Co. in Bowmanville.

I’m especially excited for the kids zone, and I bring my own family every year to enjoy the free fun.

At 12:30 p.m., Old Town School of Folk Music’s famous Wiggleworms will take the stage. At 1:30 p.m., the League of Enchantment, a nonprofit that works to bring joy to children facing medical challenges, will host character meet and greets (think princesses and superheroes!). At 2 p.m., magicians with Cosmic Underground Theater will amaze the crowd. At 4:15 p.m., the Jesse White Tumblers, fresh off of their run on “America’s Got Talent,” will soar above us. Plus we’ll have a bouncy house and the Englewood Arts Collective will be on hand with a clay play table in the kids zone — and so much more.

One of the best parts of our Block Party every year is seeing groups from neighborhoods all over the city partner with us to bring the magical day to life — many of which have been featured in Block Club stories! It’s like a big family reunion — with beer, live music, fun vendors and thousands of our friends.

RSVP for free or snag your VIP tickets here.

See you there,

Good morning, Chicago,

It’s Atavia Reed, your Englewood reporter. Our Block Club Block Party is quickly coming up, and we’re so excited to see you all. The fun kicks off noon-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Half Acre Beer Co. in Bowmanville. I’ll be there along with my Block Club colleagues to chat it up!

This year, I’m especially thrilled to have Englewood in the house — specifically, the creative minds behind the Englewood Arts Collective, a powerhouse of South Side artists making waves in Chicago.

From 3-4 p.m, Jerrold “JustFlo” Anderson, a founding member of the collective, will host a live painting session on the main stage. Over in the kids section, Englewood Arts co-founder JoVonna Jackson will lead a clay play therapeutic table, where kids can shape their imaginations while creating ceramics.

I’ve covered the work of the Englewood Arts Collective for years. One of my first stories at Block Club was on a cold, November day with MacArthur Grant winner and collective co-founder Tonika Johnson as she took us on a tour of her project, “Inequity for Sale.”

When you learn the collective’s individual style, you never forget it. I can drive through the South Side now and easily spot when Joe “Cujodah” Nelson has been at work with his vibrant, comic-book style art.

I’m excited for you all to see that magic in motion, too.

You can RSVP for free or snag your VIP tickets here. Hopefully to see you there.

Until next time,

Good afternoon, Block Clubbers,

We have plenty of neighborhood news to share out of City Council today, including a new proposal to impose a year-long ban on building new data centers or expanding existing ones that is being pushed by Mayor Brandon Johnson. The mayor’s pitch comes on the heels of his recent reelection campaign announcement and as public sentiment for the industry has soured.

Both Johnson’s proposal and a related one to regulate data centers from Ald. Bill Conway (34th) face uphill battles after being sent to the council’s rules committee.

The council also approved a large public funding package for the Foundry Park megadevelopment and a long-debated plan to expand Francis W. Parker School in Lincoln Park. Those stories and more news below.

Tell me what you’d like to see our reporters dig into in your neighborhood: stephen@blockclubchi.org.

Good morning, Chicago,

Chicagoans will make history this fall by electing all 21 members of the school board.

School board members oversee Chicago Public Schools and its budget. They hire and evaluate the CEO. They set CPS policies and vote on opening or closing schools. They approve contracts and decide how our tax dollars are spent.

Even if you don’t have a kid in Chicago Public Schools, your vote in the Nov. 3 general election matters.

Historically, the mayor has chosen Chicago’s school board. The shift to a fully elected one was set in motion in 2021, when state lawmakers passed a bill calling for its creation.

In 2024, Chicago was divided into 10 districts. Residents elected 10 of the board’s 21 members; Mayor Brandon Johnson chose the other 11, including the board president.

Each of those 10 districts is now split into two — and all 21 seats are up for election.

So, who’s running in your district? What issues are they prioritizing? How will they drive change if they’re elected?

Today, in partnership with our friends at Chalkbeat, the Sun-Times and WBEZ, we're rolling out a voter guide with profiles of each candidate, an interactive map with details on each district and more, so you’ll be ready when you go to the polls.

Thank you to our newsroom partners and to you, for making this work possible and supporting local journalism.

Good afternoon, Block Clubbers,

Happy Friday.

Cub-Sox World Series, anyone?

I’ve caught a few memorable musical performances along the Chicago River’s Wild Mile, but I’ve yet to stumble upon a show at The Wieners Circle or at a local taqueria. That’s where Chicago musician Chris Dunn almost exclusively takes his Fleshed Out solo shows.

“One thing that actually makes me do something is if there’s some sort of fun idea that makes it an extra challenge. When I play at a club, I find it just boring,” he tells reporter Leen Yassine. Read more about his story below.

In other news, Chicagoans will have to wait until at least Tuesday to learn whether the City Council will approve the proposed $2.5 billion sale of the city’s parking meter rights to a different set of private investors than the ones behind the widely panned 2008 deal.

And Christkindlmarket just unveiled this year’s collectibles that will be on offer for the market’s 30th anniversary.

Tell me what you’d like to see our reporters tackle next: stephen@blockclubchi.org.

Alderpeople kicked a final vote on Chicago’s parking meter rights sale to next week. Under renegotiated terms of the potential $2.5 billion, the city would get a 5-percent cut of the parking meter income going forward. Read more.

Christkindlmarket unveiled new flute glass-inspired mugs and shot glasses for its 30th anniversary this year. The Krampus stuffy also returns to the German-style holiday market, which is coming back to the Loop and Wrigleyville starting Nov. 20. Read more.

Local musician Chris Dunn doesn’t need a stage to build an audience — he’s exclusively played restaurants this year. He performs his Fleshed Out pet project at venues like Uptown taquerias, accommodating Asian restaurants and The Wieners Circle. Read more.

The Obama Center is hosting a series of shorts from Black Chicago filmmakers Tuesday. Registration is currently full for “Shorts from the Block: Black Harvest’s Chicago Stories,” but an onsite waitlist will be available for potential attendees. Read more.

Thanks, as always, for spending time with us.

Hi, Chicago,

Two years ago, I wanted to dive deeper into Chicago’s curfew laws. Specifically, I wanted to know where the curfew was being enforced the most, who was being affected and what that could tell us about how the city uses curfews as a public safety tool.

Luckily, Lucia Preziosi, our investigative intern at the time, was thinking the same thing.

So we teamed up and embarked on a reporting journey that included more than 20 Freedom of Information Act requests, letters sent to parents whose children had received curfew citations and hours spent covering City Hall meetings as officials debated expanding the city’s curfew laws.

What we found helped paint a clearer picture of how curfew enforcement actually plays out across Chicago and which communities experience it the most.

I hope you find this reporting useful as the debate over curfews and their impact on public safety continues at City Hall.

Projects like this take time, persistence and resources. If you value deeply reported local journalism that digs beyond the headlines, please consider subscribing to Block Club Chicago. Your support allows us to keep asking these questions and doing this kind of work.

Existing City Curfew Laws Enforced Largely In Black And Latino Communities, Data Shows

For more than a year, Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) has worked to convince a majority of the City Council to give the police department powers to declare on-the-spot curfews in response to large teen gatherings.

“Nothing good can come from allowing young teens to remain unsupervised on the streets in the overnight hours,” Hopkins wrote Block Club in a text this spring. “If parents fail to keep them home, that necessitates enforcing the curfew laws.”

Since then, Hopkins has renewed his call for stronger curfew rules. Some of his colleagues have introduced their own measures to impose new fines on the parents of curfew violators. They say their goals are to prevent violence and property damage.

But alderpeople who want tougher measures haven’t shown how they would be more effective than Chicago’s existing curfew laws — and a Block Club analysis of curfew records shows that youth in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods get ticketed more than youth in whiter neighborhoods.

Happy Monday, Chicago,

I’m so grateful it’s finally fall. This summer I’ve been attacked by gangs of flies, overtaken by swarms of gnats and been absolutely FEASTED on by mosquitoes. A Message For Block Club Readers From Switchyards

What's a neighborhood work club?

After selling out their first Chicago club in Logan Square on the day memberships launched, Switchyards, the world’s first neighborhood work club, is opening two new locations in Lincoln Park and Fulton Market.

The best way to understand what a neighborhood work club is is to see it with your own eyes. So they’re inviting the city to try out Switchyards for a week for free at both new clubs, October 15 through 21. Plus, they’ll have drink pop-ups from some of the best places in the city—including Metric, Hexe, Side Practice and more.

The Lincoln Park club will open at 2440 N. Lincoln Ave., inside a former A&P supermarket that later became an Army-Navy supply store. In Fulton Market, Switchyards will take over 1046 W. Kinzie St., a former provisions warehouse turned studio.

Switchyards members can work in a place built entirely for focus and productivity. Membership grants 24/7 access to all current and future clubs. Both locations will feature a café area for collaboration and meetings, plus a library designed for deep work and focus. The clubs will also offer bookable phone booths and meeting rooms on-site at no additional cost to members.

Memberships for both clubs will drop all on one day on Thursday, October 22, at 10 am CT, with the clubs opening on Monday, October 26. Only 350 memberships will be available per club, and every club opened in 2025 (and 2026 so far) sold out on drop day.

So come by and try out Switchyards during their sneak peeks, October 15 through October 21. Get a tour, free drinks at the pop-ups, and see the space with your own eyes. All events are free to attend.

Your Daily Dose of Neighborhood News

September 29, 2026

Good morning, Chicago,

It’s Jenny McVeigh, Block Club’s director of donor engagement.

One of my favorite parts of our annual Block Party is the silent auction. Of course, I love seeing what everyone bids on, but what I love most is what the auction represents.

Throughout the year, Block Club reporters introduce readers to the small businesses, restaurants, artists and makers that make Chicago’s neighborhoods special. We celebrate the places opening their doors, the people creating something new and the longtime neighborhood institutions that help give our communities their character.

When it comes time for our Block Party, so many of those same people turn around and support us.

This year, dozens of local businesses, restaurants, artists and cultural organizations generously contributed to our silent auction. That means you can bid on everything from dining and neighborhood experiences to theater, arts and entertainment, all while supporting the nonprofit newsroom that brings you neighborhood news every day.

You can preview all of this year’s silent auction items here.

You’ll find contributions from Chicago favorites like Longman & Eagle, Tzuco, Galit, Revolution Brewing and Pilsen Community Books, alongside experiences from organizations including The Joffrey Ballet, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and the Chicago Architecture Center.

That’s why I love the silent auction so much. It gives us an opportunity to celebrate and support the people and places that support our journalism, while raising critical funds to keep our reporters in neighborhoods across Chicago.

Every winning bid helps sustain the reporting you rely on, but it can also introduce you to a new neighborhood restaurant, a local artist or maker whose work you’ve never seen before, or a Chicago business you’ll want to visit again and again.

The silent auction opens at noon on Saturday, but you can start browsing the items now. Take a look, find a few favorites and make a plan for what you want to bid on when the auction goes live.

Thank you for supporting local journalism and the Chicago communities that make our work possible.

Happy bidding!

Jenny McVeigh

Good afternoon, Block Clubbers,

More than a week ago, I even felt a twinge of guilt upon catching my first glimpses of pumpkins for sale — fearing that we were already lagging behind. It’s the sort of keeping up with the neighbors mentality that I can get behind, and I’m happy to report that our place is adequately decked out for spooky season. Good morning, Chicago,

This Saturday, our annual Block Club Block Party is taking over Half Acre Beer Co., and I can’t wait to see you all there. I’ll be easy to spot — you can find me in the Kids Zone dressed as Queen Elsa.

I’ll be volunteering 1-3 p.m. with a few members of the League of Enchantment Chicago, and I can’t wait to see the looks on the kids’ faces when they see their favorite characters come to life. That’s what the league is all about: bringing joy to children through the magic of cosplay.

Our members have visited hospitals and community events, delivered Christmas gifts and made a difference to thousands of kids across the Chicago area, and I’m so excited to bring that joy to the Block Party.

While I usually take my cosplays to comic-cons, cosplaying during community events is very special. I’ll never forget the first time a little girl ran up to me while I was dressed as Princess Anna, jumped into my arms for a hug and proceeded to excitedly tell me everything she loved about “Frozen” (and my buddy Olaf). She looked at me like I was the REAL Anna, and it was something so sweet that I’ll never forget. For me, cosplay is about more than the photos and the conventions. It’s about the memories you help create.

And our character meet-and-greet isn’t the only thing happening in the Kids Zone. Englewood Arts Collective will be there helping us all get a little creative with a clay play table and ceramic magnet-making. And we’ll also have a bouncy house!

So will I see you there? It’s FREE! RSVP here.

Pope Leo refused to comment last week, but may face further questions if his beloved Sox make a deep run. 📸: Colin Boyle/Block Club Chicago

Good afternoon, Block Clubbers,

An emergent question is gaining shape as we enter October: Is Pope Leo directing divine intervention to his beloved White Sox’s miraculous turnaround and now successful postseason start?

Before the Sox beat the Astros 6-3 to take Game 1 in a best-of-three series Tuesday, a letter from the Chicago-born pope ended with the declaration: “I willingly invoke the Almighty’s abundant blessings upon you and your loved ones.” Moments after recording the game’s final out, the Sox celebrated on social media with the message: “ABUNDANTLY BLESSED.”

A week ago, after the Sox and Cubs both clinched playoff berths within minutes of each other, the pontiff was asked whether he had anything to do with the Sox’s fortunes and his thoughts on the Cubs: “No comment. Great things happen in Chicago.”

We are watching this afternoon’s Game 2 closely as we try to get to the bottom of this for you.

What’s going on where you live? Send neighborhood news tips: stephen@blockclubchi.org.

A Message For Block Club Readers From JPMorganChase

Don't let scammers crash back-to-school season

Frank Rios

Today’s students and young adults are true digital natives, having grown up online, learning to navigate digital spaces as a normal part of daily life. As they transition to college, they turn to digital platforms and social media for everything from apartment hunting and job searches to shopping, banking and talking with friends.

That familiarity, however, can create a false sense of security, making younger adults just as much of a target for fraud and scams as older individuals. According to the FBI's Internet Crime Report, Americans ages 20–29 reported more than $500 million to internet-crime losses in 2025.

As scammers become more sophisticated, including using AI, students need to be more vigilant than ever about fraud and scams. Understanding the most common ones can help you and your children avoid becoming victims.

Common scams targeting students (and the families supporting them)

→ Online shopping and marketplace scams

Whether your student is furnishing a dorm, moving into an apartment or buying textbooks--or you’re helping them pay for essentials—online deals and secondhand marketplaces can help you save money while also creating more opportunities for scammers.

Buy from official and trusted retailers whenever possible, double check website URLs for misspellings or other red flags, and make sure the site uses https://. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true as well. Avoid clicking links in unsolicited emails or text messages, including fake "missed delivery" notifications that often lead to fraudulent websites or malware.

Before making a purchase, read seller reviews and ratings. If you're buying locally, meet in a safe public place and inspect the item before paying.

→ Job scams

As students return to school this fall, some may be looking for part-time jobs or internships. Scammers target students with fake jobs offering high salaries, flexible schedules or jobs you can do from a residence hall, apartment or home.

If your child receives a job offer by text, email, or direct message – be cautious, especially if they never applied to work at that company. Encourage them to use well-known job boards and then apply directly through the company's official website.

Also, if an employer asks them to pay upfront for training, equipment, background checks or application fees, it may be a sign of a scam. Legitimate companies will never charge you to get a job. They also won’t send you money and then ask you to return a portion of it.

→ Rental and housing scams

Scammers know student housing is in high demand. They’ll often post fake apartment listings or copy legitimate ones to trick potential renters (or their families) into sending money for a deposit.

Rental prices that seem unusually low should raise a red flag. Use a reverse image search to see if photos of the property appear on a different website or in a different location. Research unfamiliar property managers or housing websites before sending money, and avoid paying deposits through wire transfers, gift cards or peer-to-peer payment apps.

Double check the address, read online reviews of the property management company and schedule a tour of the house or apartment before signing a lease or sending a deposit. That way, you’ll know the listing and location is real.

The influence of AI

Thanks to artificial intelligence, scammers can now create cloned voices and deepfake videos, along with fraudulent emails, text messages and even websites and apps that look real. These AI tools let scammers impersonate family members, employers, banks, law enforcement, delivery companies and trusted brands to get you to send money or share personal information. They may even target parents directly—claiming your child is in trouble and needs money immediately.

How to protect yourself (and your children)

No matter what type of scam you encounter, a few simple habits can go a long way toward reducing your risk:

Limit the personal information you and your children share online and make social media profiles private whenever possible. This can help reduce the information scammers can use to target you, guess your security questions or attempt to access your financial accounts.
When you’re making a payment, use more protected methods, such as credit and debit cards, which generally offer stronger consumer protections than wire transfers, gift cards or peer-to-peer payment apps. Treat peer-to-peer payments, such as Zelle, like cash — once the money is sent, it's often difficult to recover.
Scammers can spoof phone numbers to make calls look like they’re coming from your bank, law enforcement or another trusted organization. Don’t automatically trust your caller ID – if you get a call demanding immediate action or claiming there’s a problem with your account, hang up and call back directly using a verified phone number. Banks will never call and ask you for account information, tell you to transfer money to ‘protect’ it or pressure you to act immediately.
Don’t click links or download attachments from unexpected emails or text messages and avoid accessing your financial accounts or making online purchases on public Wi-Fi, where savvy cybercriminals can gain access to your login credentials.
Perhaps most importantly, slow down. Back-to-school season brings a flurry of financial decisions and scammers know students and families are looking for deals. They often create a false sense of urgency to try to pressure people into making quick decisions. Taking a few extra minutes to verify information can make the difference.

The bottom line

Whether your student is shopping for school supplies, searching for a job or signing a first lease, their status as a student can make them a prime target for scammers—and families can be targeted too.

Stay skeptical of unsolicited offers, verify before you pay or share personal information, and slow down when something feels rushed. Those simple habits can help protect your money, your identity and your family’s peace of mind throughout the school year from scams and fraud.

24 Things To Do This Weekend

Happy Friday Eve, Block Clubbers!

Do you hear that?

The music. The laughter. The sound of people conversing with old friends and making new ones. That’s the Block Club Block Party and it’s almost here.

In two days, Half Acre Beer Co. will be filled with our neighbors, families, readers, local vendors and performers for a day that’s become one of my favorite days of the year because it captures what Block Club is all about.

Our reporters spend all year telling stories about Chicago’s neighborhoods, while behind the scenes, our staff is working hard to build partnerships and raise money to make their work possible. But once a year, we get to step away from the day-to-day work of reporting and fundraising (OK, let’s be honest, we’re still fundraising!) and celebrate with the people we’re here for.

We’ll have DJs on the ones and twos; performances by the Wiggleworms, Cosmic Underground Theater, the Jesse White Tumblers and more; plus tons of local vendors. Visit our dedicated Kids Zone with your little ones (yes, there's a bouncy house!). Get your portrait drawn by the artist behind Terrible Portraits — or be a part of our Live Block Club Podcast. Place your bids at our live silent auction featuring donations from local businesses across the city. Don’t forget to grab a Block Club Extra! Extra! Xtra Pale Ale, with $1 from every purchase going back to support our work.

There will be plenty of moments that make you stop, look around and think ... this is what community looks like. This is Block Club Chicago.

So whether this will be your first time or you’re coming back again this year, I hope you’ll join us.

The Block Party is free and open to the public. Check out our vendors, silent auction, VIP ticket options and grab some Block Club merch on your way out.

So ... do you hear that?

That’s your invitation. We’ll see you noon-9 p.m. this Saturday at Half Acre Beer Co.

And I’ll see you on the dance floor!

Good afternoon, Block Clubbers,

Welcome to October. Fun fact about Saturday’s Block Club Block Party: The forecast calls for temps more than 20 degrees cooler than last year’s party. Bring on fall.

A City Council committee planned to meet Thursday to discuss a controversial city-funded victim services program run through the Chicago Police Department. The hearing was scheduled in direct response to a June Block Club report that revealed the program had struggled to be effective. But survivors and advocates left outraged and unheard after Thursday's hearing had to be canceled because not enough alderpeople showed up to achieve a quorum. More on this below.

1 Thing To Do This Weekend: Block Club Block Party

Good morning, Chicago,

Up until very recently, I would have introduced myself to you as Block Club’s Far Northwest Side reporter. But last week, I started a new role covering the Lincoln Square, North Center, Ravenswood, Irving Park, Albany Park and North Park neighborhoods.

I’ve always loved these neighborhoods, not least of all because we’ve been hosting our Block Club Block Party at Half Acre Beer Co. in Bowmanville.

It's amazing to see how many neighbors and local businesses come out to support Block Club at the Block Party every year.

And great news: The free Block Party returns to Half Acre TOMORROW. We’re going to have music, performances, local vendors, a live podcast recording, a kids zone, a beer brewed in collaboration with Half Acre and so much more. You can learn more about the Block Party and RSVP here.

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend,

Goose Island Shrimp Honored After 53 Years As A Chicago Staple

Lamon Eichelberger gets emotional when talking about his community.

Over the past three decades, the West Side native has risen the ranks from night shift worker to manager to owner of Goose Island Shrimp House, the no-frills, counter-service-only spot that’s offered a simple menu of fried shrimp, frog legs and other seafood since 1973.

Eichelberger has served thousands of Chicagoans over the years, including many families who grew up nearby in Cabrini Green and still return to the shrimp house at 1011 W. Division St., even if they now live miles away.

Then there are the longtime staff members, some of whom — like Eichelberger’s brother and general manager, Bernard — have also worked at the restaurant about as long as he has.

It’s those relationships that kept Eichelberger working long hours year after year to make sure Goose Island Shrimp House stays in business, something he hopes will continue for decades to come.

Film screenings will be held on the evenings of October 9th and 10th in the beautiful Collaboraction Theatre space on 1757 North Kimball Avenue #105, from 7-10 p.m. Each evening will feature live exclusive interviews with the filmmakers.

Every festival is a one-of-a-kind experience where you will see the work of emerging filmmakers that is often not available anywhere else, with many guests from Chicago's vibrant film scene and beyond speaking in person about mental health and the movies. The audience is encouraged to participate in the discussion and community.

We screen films from the sci-fi and horror genre, comedies, animation, musicals, experimental works, documentary and drama, and more. Mental Filmness selects films for their realistic and empathetic visions of mental health, which takes as many forms as there are mental health diagnoses and conditions.

Mental Filmness is a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading mental health awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness. We believe film is a powerful medium for this message as it engages the senses and communicates a lived experience in an artistic manner.

Audience members have described seeing something they have felt in an authentic way for the first time, or recognizing something on screen that they never knew had a name.

Our mission to spread empathy and awareness ensures that all our screenings have been and always will be all free, and all for mental health. See you at the movies about mental health!

A Message For Block Club Readers From Well-Paid Maids

Living-wage home cleaning has swept Chicago

Well-Paid Maids, the country's only certified living-wage cleaning company, is marking two years in Chicagoland this month.

Chicagoans are busy, and enlisting the help of a professional home cleaner is a huge time-saver. But it’s easy to feel guilty hiring cleaners, who often work long hours for little pay.

Enter Well-Paid Maids. They debuted in the Chicago area two years ago and have performed over 2,000 cleanings since, all while maintaining 5-star review averages on Yelp and Google.

Founded in the Washington, DC area in 2017, Well-Paid Maids is a living-wage cleaning company. That means it pays cleaners - who are W-2 employees, not contractors - at least $26 an hour.

Employees are also offered a comprehensive benefits package, including:

Health, dental, and vision insurance, with the company paying 80% of premium costs for staff and their families

24 paid days off per year

A 401(k) with the company matching 100% of contributions up to 3% of income, and 50% of contributions from 3% to 5% of income

Because Well-Paid Maids takes care of its employees, they work hard to take care of you and your home.

“We stand by our company’s mission,” said Lexi Grant, Operations Director at Well-Paid Maids. “People deserve for their work to be respected and recognized. When that happens, you love what you do, and you create the best results.”

Over 80 clients in the Chicago area have left 5-star reviews of their positive experiences with Well-Paid Maids, noting cleaners arrived on time, were easy to communicate with and left their homes spotless. Plus, they felt good supporting a company that treats employees so well.

Here’s what one reviewer said: “I appreciate that this company offers...a living wage and paid time off. The cleaning people bring company-provided tools and non-toxic supplies. I highly recommend Well-Paid Maids and I am glad they have come to Chicago. I hope they set a trend."

After two years of operations, it's clear that they have. Keep the trend going and see the difference a living wage makes - in your home and in the lives of their staff.

Your Daily Dose of Neighborhood News

October 5, 2026

Good morning, Chicago,

We’re back on the beat after a beautiful and very busy weekend for Block Club.

Our third annual Block Party filled Half Acre Beer Co. all day Saturday as thousands of people came out to celebrate Chicago.

By our count, more than 2,300 people showed up to check out local vendors, dance, jump in the bounce house and enjoy the vibes of a perfect fall Saturday in Chicago.

Thank you to everyone who showed up to make it a rousing success. And thanks to our sponsors, vendors and Block Club team members for all of the work. We had volunteers around Half Acre’s parking lot and taproom to make it run smoothly. We had DJs keeping the party going. We had a live podcast, Terrible Portraits, Englewood Arts Collective, empanadas, brisket, jerk chicken, the Jesse White Tumblers, the Bubble Lady and tons more.

It lifted our hearts to see so many Block Club fans come together to have a great time, soak in a crisp fall day (with the White Sox winning a playoff game), hear house beats filling the air and see bubbles everywhere.

Local news is our business, but so is building community and bringing people together. It’s not too late to support what we’re building every day at Block Club. Sign up for a subscription if you haven’t already, or donate to our nonprofit. Chicago needs local news, and we’re here to make it happen.

Thank you!

A Message For Block Club Readers From CS Gym Design

A Home Gym Designed by People Who Actually Train

Chicago winters are long. The gym you will actually use all season is the one downstairs.

CS Gym Design plans, equips and builds custom gyms across Chicago and the suburbs: basements, garages, spare rooms, condo building fitness centers and full commercial gyms. One team handles the whole job, from the first sketch to the final install.

We are not a showroom trying to move a machine. Founder Tom Parry has spent nearly 20 years coaching everyone from Division 1 athletes to weekend warriors, and he designed and built the Chicago Strength gyms in River North, Logan Square and Avondale. Every project starts with how you train, then finds the equipment that fits you and the room.

What You Get

A plan built for your space. We design around your ceiling height, flooring, power and storage, so nothing gets crammed in.

See it before you buy it. You get a scaled 3D design of your gym to walk through and adjust before a single piece is ordered.

Premium equipment for less. Our relationships with Rogue, Concept2, Keiser, Precor and more mean pricing you will not find at retail.

Built and installed for you. Delivery, assembly and any construction work are handled by our crew.

For Block Club Readers: A Free Site Visit

Book by October 31 and we will come to your home or building at no cost. We will measure the space, talk through how you train and what you want the room to feel like, and walk you through what your gym could look like.
